Mira Murati was born in 1988 in Vlore, Albania, a country in Southeastern Europe. At the age of 16, she moved to Canada to attend Pearson College UWC, where she completed her International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007. She pursued her Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering at Dartmouth College, graduating in 2012.

Beginning her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, Murati then worked at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. In 2013, she joined Tesla as a senior product manager for the Model X, a luxury electric SUV. Leaving Tesla in 2016, she joined Leap Motion, a company specializing in developing motion-sensing technology for virtual and augmented reality.

In 2018, Murati joined OpenAI as the Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships. Her role involved commercializing OpenAI's products and refining them through human feedback. She played a key role in the leadership teams that developed some of the most advanced AI systems globally, including ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex.

ChatGPT is a chatbot capable of generating natural and coherent text on various subjects, drawing from a vast corpus of web data. Dall-E is a system that creates images based on textual descriptions, like "a cat with a bow tie." Codex is a system that generates computer code from natural language commands, such as "create a website with a blue background."

In May 2022, Murati was promoted to CTO of OpenAI, overseeing the company’s research, product, and safety teams. She became the interim CEO of OpenAI in November 2023, after the board of directors fired Sam Altman, the previous CEO, due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the organization. Murati is the first woman and the first person of Albanian origin to hold the top position at OpenAI.

Murati said she was “honored and humbled” to step into the leadership role at the company. “We are now at a crucial juncture where our tools are being widely adopted, developers are actively building on our platforms, and policymakers are deliberating on the best ways to regulate these systems,” Murati wrote in the memo. “This is welcome progress and an opportunity to participate in a future where AI is built and used for good.”

Murati's appointment as OpenAI's interim CEO heralds a crucial shift for the organization, succeeding the departure of Sam Altman, the former CEO. Assuming the role of CEO stands as a testament to her leadership prowess and extensive comprehension of the AI sector. Tasked with the CEO mantle, her responsibility entails steering OpenAI through a pivotal transitional phase, utilizing her technical proficiency and business acumen to chart the company's forthcoming trajectory.
